Locals in the NFL: Utah athletes making an impact in Week 2

SALT LAKE CITY — In Week 2 of the NFL season, some local players had noteworthy performances.

Tim Patrick, Utah

Patrick had two targets on Sunday, and catching one that went for 26 yards. The catch came at a vital time for the Denver Broncos, who were trailing the Oakland Raiders 19-17 with 18 seconds left. Patrick's lone reception got the Broncos in field goal range with 10 seconds left to play. On the next play, the Broncos place kicker made a 36-yard game-winning field goal.

Alex Smith, Utah

Smith had an efficient game, completing 33-of-46 passes for a 71.7 percent completion percentage. He didn’t throw any interceptions, but was unable to find the end zone through the air. His offensive line struggled to keep him upright as he was pressured often and sacked three times. The Washington Redskins dropped the game to the Indianapolis Colts, 21-9.

Fred Warner, BYU

Warner was all over the field on defense for the San Francisco 49ers. Warner was the second-leading tackler for the 49ers Sunday afternoon with 10 total tackles. The 49ers beat the Lions 30-27.

Nick Vigil, Utah State

Nick Vigil of the Cincinnati Bengals had nine total tackles in Thursday night’s game against the Baltimore Ravens. He also had a pass breakup in a 34-23 win.

BYU

  • Taysom Hill (New Orleans Saints) got involved in special teams with a big 46-yard kickoff return.
  • Kyle Van Noy (New England Patriots) had six total tackles and an interception in a 31-20 loss in Jacksonville.
  • Jamaal Williams (Green Bay Packers) rushed for 59 yards on 16 carries and added three receptions for 12 yards. His longest rush was for 12 yards.
  • Ezekiel Ansah (Detroit Lions) was surprisingly ruled out of Monday night’s game last-minute after being expected to play.

Utah

  • Eric Weddle (Baltimore Ravens) totaled seven tackles and broke up a pass in Thursday night’s loss to the Bengals.
  • Marcus Williams (New Orleans Saints) snagged an interception and returned it for 22 yards Sunday. He also had three tackles.
  • Devontae Booker (Denver Broncos) rushed for 4 yards on two attempts. He also had 11 yards through the air on two receptions.
  • Eric Rowe (New England Patriots) totaled two tackles in Sunday’s loss to the Jaguars.
  • Derrick Shelby (Atlanta Falcons) had one tackle.

Utah State

  • Nevin Lawson (Detroit Lions) tackled four players and had a pass breakup in Sunday’s loss.
  • Kyler Fackrell (Green Bay Packers) had one tackle.
  • Bobby Wagner (Seattle Seahwaks) was ruled out for Monday night’s game against the Bears.

Weber State

  • Taron Johnson (Buffalo Bills) missed Sunday’s game due to an injury.
