THE OCEAN — I know I usually try to be clever in my Have You Seen This? write ups. I share some anecdotes from my life or self deprecate until you feel bad enough for me that you laugh. I don't have any of that this time because this video is awesome and really it speaks for itself. No attempt at wit here, just a video that will get your heart pumping, your eyes wide and your heart melted somehow.
On July 26, John Dornellas, who captains a boat for Coldwater Alaska — an exploration company providing boat trips for tourists in Halibut Cove, Alaska — saw an otter about 200 yards away from his boat. The little mammal was being chased by a very big mammal: an orca.
The otter was in a tough spot and Dornellas felt terrible for the little guy. I get it. He was about to watch this adorable yet fierce animal become dinner. But the otter had other plans and decided to hitch a ride. The otter jumps onto Dornellas' boat to wait out the killer whale storm.
The otter is a little nervous of the human filming him, but not as nervous as he is about that whale waiting to eat him in the water. At one point Dornellas says, "I'm not going to hurt you." The otter looks back at him, almost saying,"You sure, bro? Cause I've got a lot of problems right now and I'm not sure I can trust you."
Well, the otter decides he can trust him and hangs out on the boat for a while. He even jumps back in the water only to realize the whale is still waiting for him and jumps back in. The whole thing is pretty amazing to see, but it jumps a level when we see the view from another boat nearby. Dornellas' fellow captain, Chantrelle Major, filmed the whole thing from her boat and it shows the orca circling Dornellas' boat over and over looking for the otter.
This whole thing is just so cool, and I feel like I could watch it for much longer than 3 minutes.
