THAILAND — Self-isolation and social distancing are the best things we can do right now to limit the spread of COVID-19.

Even though it’s the smartest thing to do — especially in order to protect high-risk individuals in our communities — it’s a necessity that will be hard in most industries.

It was clear from the get-go that travel and tourism would be immediately affected. And in some destinations, the difficulties stretch beyond the livelihoods of workers connected to those industries. Something that may not have crossed your mind (it didn’t cross mine) is the effect on the ecosystem in some exotic locales.

In this video from Lopburi, Thailand, you’ll see two hordes of monkeys in the streets. According to the Bangkok Post, the two rival gangs live in this tourist destination: one gang lives in the temples, and the other gang lives in the city.

The monkeys are very territorial, and they generally stay clear of each other. But on March 11, they clashed in the streets in a big way.

Some locals theorized that it could’ve been the heat, but others are pointing to the drop in tourism. Since the main food source for these monkeys is what tourists feed them, it’s likely they are venturing out of their territories to find enough food.

It’s a chilling scene, but it’s an important reminder of how connected our world is and that our actions often mean something, both in the short and long term.
