THE POOL — It's a sport that may result in black eyes and it requires you to hold your breath, but there's nothing better for teamwork.

At least, that's how the captain of the USA Underwater Hockey team describes the sport in this video. Underwater hockey might not be something you're familiar with, but captain Tyera Eulberg wants you to know how great it is. In the video with Great Big Story, she gives a brief explainer on how it works, how hard it can be and most importantly, how rewarding it is.

"It is the ultimate team sport," Eulberg says in the video, before going on to explain how the nature of underwater hockey requires everyone to constantly work together. When your teammates might run out of breath at any second, you have to be there to back them up.

Yesterday's Have You Seen This?

And though this might not be the most popular sport yet, it has been around for a while. The first world championships were held back in 1980 in Vancouver. Five countries competed. Over time, more and more countries have joined in, and this year's world championships took place in July with around 25 countries competing.

Underwater hockey is different from ice hockey and different from swimming, but it combines skills that are needed in both. And it's definitely the love of the sport that draws people in.

"It's so elegant. Being underwater is just a beautiful thing," Eulberg says. "I feel like some really gorgeous sea creature when I play."
