SALT LAKE CITY — Hockey fans are intense; trust me, I've lived in Canada during the playoffs (in Sidney Crosby's hometown nonetheless). Nothing comes between them and a hockey game — nothing. And for one soon-to-be mother in Chicago, even childbirth was forced to wait.
As a Chicago Blackhawks fan, Donna Lebano wasn't going to let childbirth get in the way of last Thursday's playoff game against the Minnesota Wild. During the second period, Lebano felt hard contractions and was getting closer to delivery, ABC Chicago reports.
"No way was I leaving," Lebano said in a statement from Adventist Hinsdale Hospital. "We are a Hawks family. I had to see the end of the game."
A few hours later, Lebano delivered a healthy boy, Owen Michael.
"Owen is such a great baby, very patient," Lebano said. "We're doing fantastic and we think of Own as Hossa's hat trick. Two goals in a playoff game and a baby delivered moments after getting to the hospital is an epic hat trick."
Now that's dedication.
Tiger Woods victory
Over the weekend, Tiger Woods came out the victor in The Players Championship. Tied for the lead with two holes left to play, Woods managed to stay afloat as Sergio Garcia hit three balls into the water for a bad finish.
Woods appears to be hitting his stride, winning more tournaments as the year progresses.
"I had an opportunity to win the golf tournament when I was tied for the lead today, and I thought I handled the situation well and really played well today when I really needed to," Woods said. "And that's something I'm excited about it."
Garcia, however, was less-than-gracious in his statements at the end of play. Garcia criticized Woods for distracting him in the middle of his backswing, according to NBC.
"I wouldn't say he didn't see that I was ready, but you do have a feel when the other guy is going to hit," Garcia said. "Right as I was on top of the backswing, he pulled a 5-wood or 3-wood out of the rough and, obviously, everybody started screaming, so that didn't help very much."
Woods, not wanting to be outdone by his competitor, said he was not surprised Garcia was complaining.
"The marshal told me he already hit so I pulled the club and was getting ready to play my shot, and then I hear comments afterward. Not really surprising that he's complaining about something."
Fancy baseball plays
Over the weekend, there were some great plays that happened in MLB. First: there was a line-drive shot up the first base line, hitting the bag and sending the ball flying in the air. Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Brandon Inge fields the ball and tosses it to Mark Melancon to get the out.
Second: Cleveland Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera put on a show, turning a near miss into a double play. Detroit Tigers' Torii Hunter hits a grounder to Indians pitcher Joe Smith, who quickly fires it to Cabrera. With some fancy footwork, Cabrera tags second and then fires it to first to get Hunter out.
