SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Legislature unanimously passed a resolution Thursday honoring the late LDS Church President Thomas S. Monson.

"He is one of the most prominent public figures in the state of Utah over the past 50 years," said Rep. Merrill Nelson, R-Grantsville, sponsor of HCR5.

Nelson related a story about President Monson, who served as president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for nearly 10 years, giving a blessing to man who he had made one of the first patriarchs in American Samoa years earlier and later moved to Grantsville.

"President Monson never forgot a friend," he said.

Praising his leadership, care for the poor and needy, and work with Boy Scouts of America, Nelson said President Monson, who died Jan. 2 at age 90, lived the principles that he taught.

"As a young scoutmaster, I often was inspired by his example and his counsel to teach young men their duty to God and country and how to apply the principle of the Scout Law to transform boys into honorable young men," Nelson said.

President Monson's three children, Ann Monson Dibb, Thomas Lee Monson and Clark Spencer Monson, watched from the House and Senate galleries as lawmakers recognized their father's lifelong service.

Sen. Don Ipson, R-St. George, who handled the resolution in the Senate, recalled President Monson presiding over a marriage ceremony for a family member.

"I remember how comfortable he made us feel. He was very engaging," Ipson said, not letting his busy schedule interfere with the sacredness of that day.

Ipson talked about "how honored we all are that President Monson guided us and was such an example to all faiths and all walks of life."

"I, for one, am very grateful about what he has done for us," he said.

After the resolution passed unanimously, senators gave President Monson's family members a standing ovation. House members did the same.
