As a new year begins, people write resolutions and goals to make 2018 the best year yet. Part of your new year strategy should be including hygge into your life. Hygge (hoo-ga) is the Danish concept that means coziness, contentment and happiness via simple pleasures. Everyone can benefit from a little cozy contentment, right?

So, how do you incorporate hygge into your life?

Here are six simple ways to be more hyggelig (hygge-like).

Create a cozy space in your home

An essential part of hygge is creating a soothing, relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere. To do this, pick a place in your home — a small nook, an under-the-stairs cranny or an unused room — and take some time to turn said space into your designated hygge corner. If this room has a fireplace, great. If not, add warm elements like candles and soft lighting to set the mood. You’ll also want to make sure the space is clean, organized and contains items that are meaningful and bring joy. This room will be the place of mindfulness, peace and joy in your home.

Surround yourself with things that bring you joy

When creating a hygge space, make sure you fill the room with things that mean something to you. That could be a cherished family photo or heirloom, a great piece of furniture or a beautiful piece of art.

Surrounding yourself with items that bring you joy enhance happiness and help celebrate the simple pleasures in life. Meaningful items in the home can be daily reminders that small things can bring true happiness.

Stock up with hygge essentials

In your new hygge room, you’ll want to pamper yourself with a few essential items to increase coziness and warmth. Anything from a great-smelling candle to a cozy, warm blanket counts. Bundle up in comfortable socks and sweatpants, snuggle under a soft blanket, enjoy a steaming hot beverage in an oversized mug, read a great book or converse with friends. All of these things are hygge essentials.

Spend time with loved ones

Being with people who make you happy while doing things that make you happy is hygge. Whether you’re watching a favorite movie, playing a board game or simply sitting around the fireplace talking, being together in a relaxed atmosphere is the key. Surround yourself with people who enhance your life and make you smile.

Cook and eat yummy foods

Hygge is all about comfort. And that includes comfort foods. To fully experience hygge, make your favorite meal (forget the calories) and invite friends and family over to dine together. Set the table with decorative china, light candles and the fireplace and enjoy a wonderful meal in a cozy setting. Being together with loved ones while eating delicious, familiar food is the essence of hygge.

Enjoy fresh air

While hygge is often associated with winter, warm fireplaces and cozy indoor spaces, you can be hygge year-round. Experience hygge in the spring and summer as you take a long stroll outside to enjoy fresh air, nature and the natural beauty of the world.
