SALT LAKE CITY â The University of Utah may be adding more depth to its defensive backfield after news that a former Nevada player is transferring to the program.
St. George native Nephi Sewell, a defensive back who just completed his sophomore season at Nevada, recently declared his intent to transfer from the program. Sewell was expected to transfer to BYU after tweeting, âIâm home #GoCougs,â on Dec. 17, 2018, but that tweet has since been deleted.
On Wednesday, Sewellâs father, Gabriel, told Nevada Sports Net that his son was actually planning on transferring to Utah. The University of Utah, though, has yet to confirm his transfer. Should Sewellâs transfer go through, heâll add to the depth of Utahâs secondary unit, particularly a safety unit that is losing its starters to graduation, though heâd have to use a redshirt season before being eligible due to NCAA transfer rules.
In his two seasons at Nevada, the 5-foot-11 safety played in 23 games and amounted 111 tackles, six pass breakups, two interceptions, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.
Sewellâs brother, Gabe, is also seeking a transfer from Nevada and has entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal, Nevada Sports Net added. He recently finished up his third season as a starter at Nevada at linebacker, where he totaled 91 total tackles, including 20 for a loss, three sacks, two forced fumbles and two pass breakups this last season.
Gabe Sewell, however, hasnât given any indication as to where he might be looking to transfer. In May, he will graduate and will be eligible as a graduate transfer and can play immediately.
