LAS VEGAS (AP) -- A Utah man who admitted killing a 3-year-old girl and stabbing her 10-year-old sister in 2003 apologized Friday to a jury considering his fate.

Beau Maestas, 22, told the Clark County District Court jurors he was horrified and ashamed of what he did.

Maestas pleaded guilty in May 2005 to the butcher knife slaying of 3-year-old Kristyanna Cowan and the stabbing of 10-year-old Brittney Bergeron in a trailer outside a Mesquite casino.

The jury will decide whether Maestas should be put to death.

Maestas also apologized to the jury for putting them through the penalty trial.

Testimony is scheduled to continue Monday afternoon. Prosecutors and defense lawyers will then offer closing statements and the jury will begin deliberations.
