Paul Nelson ReportingUtah's top school came in at number 163 in the Newsweek Poll. So, what is it? It's West High School. Some students there say they're shocked, but others say it's no surprise.
Student: "That doesn't surprise me. We've got a lot of smart A.P. and I.B. students that go to this school."
Maybe some students at East are saying, "Who came up with this silly ranking?" Well, it's an index of the number of students in school who've taken an Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate test, divided by the number of graduating seniors. Assistant Principal Rick Jaramillo says they're recruiting more students to take these tests next year.
Rick Jaramillo: "We're targeting kids that are somewhere in the middle. They're not 'Honors A.P.' yet, and they're not the low kids. They're right in the middle someplace and they're good, college bound-type kids."
Park City, Lone Peak, Highland and Skyline high schools round out Utah's Top Five.
