MILLCREEK -- A consultant will study the feasibility of incorporating Millcreek Township, an area bounded by Salt Lake City, South Salt Lake, Murray and Holladay.
The study resulted from a citizen petition to explore the possibility of incorporation. The process requires that petitioners obtain signatures of owners of 10 percent of the property in the area. The petition has been certified by the Salt Lake County Clerk's Office.
About 65,000 residents live in the four communities that make up the township: Millcreek, Canyon Rim, East Millcreek and Mount Olympus.
The consultant has 90 days to complete the study. Two public hearings will be conducted to present the study findings.
If proponents decide to move ahead with incorporation after hearing the consultant's report, they would have 18 months to acquire signatures representing one third of the value of land and one third of the land area in the township to put the issue on the ballot. Residents of the township would vote in a general election whether the area should become a city.
If it did incorporate, Millcreek Township would become the fifth-largest city in Salt Lake County.
"I have always endorsed self-determination," says Mayor Peter Corroon in a prepared statement. "Community members should determine for themselves what type of government best serves their needs and I'm sure this study will provide more information on whether Millcreek wants to pursue incorporation."
