ETNA, Box Elder County — Six structures were saved from a fire in Etna that burned around 703 acres Saturday.
The fire, which started around 1 p.m. near Grouse Creek Road in northwest Utah, presented a challenge for firefighters as flames spread uphill and eventually split into two directions. High winds continued to shift the direction of the fire, making it difficult for the crew of 25 firefighters to get ahead of the flames and contain it, according to Mitch Zundel, economic development director for Box Elder County.
The six threatened structures were saved and further preventive measures were put in place to protect the buildings, he said.
Five single engine tankers, one helicopter and one heavy tanker have been called in to help fight the fire. After initial estimates reported the fire had burned around 1,800 acres, firefighting authorities were able to collect GPS-based measures of the fire, amending their estimates back down to only 703 acres as of about 7:30 p.m. Firefigthers estimated the blaze to be about 50 percent contained.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire.
