SALT LAKE CITY — Police in Salt Lake City are searching for a man accused of stealing a woman's minivan.

Police said around 6 p.m. Thursday, people along Emigration Street near 1300 South spotted a man looking into vehicles. Residents along that street reported they found him in a detached garage and confronted him.

Pat West, a resident in the area, said he encountered the suspicious man behind a snowblower when he opened his garage.

"As I saw him, he started to get up to go and I said 'What are you doing in here?' and he said 'I'm hiding!'," West said.

The neighbors said the man then walked away from the garage and hopped a fence, going through nearby backyards.

On 1900 East, police said the man went through the unlocked back door of a house and threatened a woman inside with a knife. The woman said the man demanded her wallet and any cash she had and threatened to tie her up. The woman told police the man stole her minivan, a silver Chrysler Town & Country.

Police are still searching for the man and the vehicle. The man is in his 20s, has a spiky mohawk, and was wearing dark clothes with a camouflage jacket. Anyone with information is asked to call Salt Lake City police dispatch at 801-799-3000.
