WASHINGTON TERRACE, Weber County — A home invasion robbery and assault over the weekend may have been the result of mistaken identity, according to police.

A 24-year-old woman suffered minor injuries after several men kicked in her door about 2 a.m. Saturday and then hit and kicked her, said Weber County Sheriff's Lt. Nate Hutchinson. The woman had only lived in the apartment for less than a week, and investigators believe the attackers were targeting the previous tenants.

The woman, who lives alone and had been sleeping, got up after hearing her door kicked in and was confronted by several men.

"As she got up to investigate, the suspects grabbed her and identified themselves as police officers," Hutchinson said.

Fortunately, a bystander happened to be outside one of the other apartments and called 911 after he saw the men kick in the woman's door and heard her scream, he said. Weber County sheriff's deputies were close by and arrived at the apartment just two minutes later.

"This was an extremely scary situation," Hutchinson said. "We're happy a deputy was so close."

Cash and undisclosed personal items were taken. Some of the items were recovered.

Travis Mixon, 20, and Matthew Nevarez, 26, both of Roy, were arrested inside the apartment. James Mayberry, 24, of Clinton, was found in a vehicle outside the apartment and was also arrested. Two others, Tazio Rodriguez, 23, of Roy, and Mario Serrano, 25, of Ogden, escaped out of a back window, according to Hutchinson.

Mixon and Nevarez were arrested for investigation of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated burglary, assault and impersonating a police officer. Mayberry was arrested for investigation of aggravated burglary. All the men have criminal histories, with Serrano having the longest of the five men, according to court records.

Hutchinson said detectives were trying to track down the previous tenants of the apartment to help with their investigation.

Anyone with information on Serrano or Rodriguez can called the Weber County Sheriff’s Office at 801-778-6916 or 801-395-8221.
