BRIGHTON — A skier died Monday after striking a tree near Brighton Resort Sunday, authorities said.

Markus Fritz, 35, died just after midnight Monday from accident-related injuries, but the exact cause of death has not yet been released, Intermountain Medical Center spokesman Jess Gomez said.

Fritz was taken off the mountain in a medical helicopter just before 12 p.m. Sunday and flown to a local hospital with a “traumatic injury,” according to Unified police Lt. Brian Lohrke.

Fritz was initially found unconscious by skiers near a tree, but it was unknown how long he had been there. Unified fire spokesman Eric Homes said Fritz was still unconscious when he was flown to the hospital.

Fritz was skiing with a friend, according to Lohrke, but there were no witnesses to the crash.

A GoFundMe* account has been set up on behalf of Fritz's family for funeral and memorial expenses.

Further details have not yet been released but will be posted as they become available.

A 20-year-old woman at Brighton Ski Resort and a 16-year-old boy at Snowbird were also hospitalized after unrelated skiing accidents Sunday.
