SALT LAKE CITY — Without third-party candidates on the ballot, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump would win Utah, a new poll shows.

Trumps comes out on top 45 percent to 34 percent in a two-person race against Democrat Hillary Clinton, according to a Dan Jones & Associates survey for UtahPolicy.com.

The pollster then pushed undecided voters to find out if they are leaning toward Trump or Clinton. Only 8 percent chose Trump, while 5 percent picked Clinton. The vast majority wouldn't make a choice.

The two questions were aimed at finding core support for the two major party candidates, one of whom will be elected president.

Jones queried 818 likely Utah voters Oct. 12-20. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percent.

A UtahPolicy.com poll of all the main candidates last week showed Trump at 30 percent, independent candidate and BYU graduate Evan McMullin with 29 percent and Clinton getting 26 percent.

According to UtahPolicy.com, the Clinton-Trump poll found:

  • Clinton doesn’t do much better among women than Trump, getting 36 percent to his 33 percent
  • Younger Utahns much prefer Clinton. She beats Trump 46 percent to 32 percent among those ages 18-24. Among 25- to 34-year-olds, Clinton wins 50 percent to 27 percent.
  • Active Mormons chose Trump in the two-person race with Clinton, 53 percent to 22 percent, with a quarter undecided.
