SALT LAKE CITY — A Logan veterinarian agreed to pay a $200,000 civil fine to resolve federal allegations about the handling of drugs at a research facility he runs.

A Drug Enforcement Administration investigation found Michael J. Larson, owner of IBEX Pre-Clinical Research, Inc., violated numerous regulations, including failing to conduct regular inventories and keep accurate records of controlled substances received and dispensed.

The investigation also showed that Larson failed to restrict access to the electronic controlled substance ordering system and had bought drugs for personal use.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office for Utah, Larson did not maintain accurate and complete records 52 times on the purchase and use of buprenorphine, a narcotic to treat pain as well as addiction to painkillers.

The company conducts orthopedic surgical studies on a variety of laboratory animals for pharmaceutical and medical device companies.

As a part of the settlement, Larson agreed to surrender his DEA registration and to associate with another veterinarian in the area to order, maintain and administer controlled substances.
