SALT LAKE CITY — Three more fun stories from the world of sports in today's From Left Field!

1. When microphone fails during national anthems, fans come to rescue

At this week's Vancouver Canucks/Blues game, singer Jim Byrnes' microphone went kaput. That's when the Canucks crowd finished Star Spangled Banner and then sang O Canada on its own.

Cool moment, Vancouver.

2. Anthony Rizzo apologies to umpire

In the fifth inning of last night's Cubs/Dodgers game, Anthony Rizzo was called for a third strike that he thought was a ball. He complained to the umpire, Angel Hernandez, afterwards.

But in his next at bat, he came to apologize to Hernandez.

He then spoke about it afterwards to reporters:

"All of the umpires are out here at the highest level, doing their best. We’re competing at our best, and they’re competing. So on a pitch that I disagreed with — to think it was a ball and then him call it a strike — I don’t like showing up the umpires. They’re out here working their tails off for 162 (games) like we are. There’s no home for them. They’re on the road the entire season. So just to let him know that, hey, ‘my fault there.’ … They’re working as hard as we’re working, and it’s just different perspectives."

3. Dez Bryant's soup injury

Dez Bryant was a limited participant in Wednesday's Cowboys practice for an odd reason: he hurt his hand cutting carrots for soup.

“He’s got a cut on the inside of his hand, so he wasn’t able to catch balls today,” coach Jason Garrett said. “He did a good job moving around, though. I think he’s feeling better and better and better.”

And the NFL.com report has this quote: "Bryant called the injury "extremely, extremely minor."

Nevertheless, soup experts everywhere were appalled.
