SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah County health officials say two people have been exposed to rabies and two bats have tested positive for the disease.
The county health department announced Monday that the exposures happened during a one-week period in August.
Officials are warning people who come in to close contact with bats to call their local health department to see if they were exposed to rabies.
In humans, the disease is rare but fatal if left untreated.
Rabies is transmitted through an infected animal's saliva, often through a bite or scratch. Health officials say people should never handle bats, and pet owners should make sure their animals are up to date on their rabies vaccine.
