10 books to help kids celebrate, understand the Fourth

SALT LAKE CITY — Before the parades, barbecues and fireworks, pull out one of these picture books to help children understand the reasons we celebrate the Fourth of July. Each book offers history, fun facts, beautiful pictures, stories and more.

1. “The American Story: 100 True Tales from American History” by Jennifer Armstrong, illustrated by Roger Roth

From inventors and abolitionists, to athletes and artists, explore some of the greatest stories in American history. Each story is delivered in short, concise text, with full-color illustrations.

2. “Celebrate Independence Day: With Parades, Picnics, and Fireworks” by Deborah Heiligman

From National Geographic Children’s Books comes a book all about America’s biggest party. A nationwide look at the history, culture and traditions of the Fourth of July will thrill children of all ages.

3. “America the Beautiful” by Katherine Lee Bates, illustrated by Chris Gall

Bring to life the meaning of the song, “America the Beautiful” with this gorgeous picture book, illustrated by Chris Gall, a direct descendant of the song’s composer. A great ode to the famous song.

4. “Shh! We’re Writing the Constitution” by Jean Fritz, illustrated by Tomie dePaola

With lots of humor and entertaining illustrations, this book chronicles the hot summer of 1787 when the United States Constitution came to life.

5. “Our Country’s Presidents” by Ann Bausum

Another great choice from National Geographic Children's Books, “Our Country’s Presidents” includes important and fun facts about the presidents.

6. “Uncle Sam and Old Glory: Symbols of America” by Delno and Jean West, illustrated by Christopher Manson

Why are our colors red, white and blue? Why is the flag called “Old Glory?” Where did the Statue of Liberty come from? To find the answers to these curious questions and many more, look no further than this fantastic book.

7. “The Very First Americans” by Cara Ashrose

A fascinating book about the many Native American tribes that lived here long before Columbus and the Pilgrims arrived. Pretty watercolor illustrations depict clothing, dwelling, tools and other Native American artifacts.

8. “Our White House: Looking In, Looking Out” by National Children’s Book and Literacy Alliance, various authors

More than 100 famous authors and illustrators donated their work to this great book. The various essays, personal accounts, poems, art and fiction come together to shine a bright light on the history, drama, architecture and functions of the White House.

9. “We Are America: A Tribute from the Heart” by Walter Dean Myers, illustrated by Christopher Myers

From father-son team Walter Dean Myers, a New York Times best-selling author and National Book Award Finalist, and Christopher Myers, a Caldecott Honor artist, comes a heartfelt tribute to the history, people and landscape of America.

10. “American Tall Tales” by Mary Pope Osbourne, illustrated by Michael McCurdy

For a lot of fun and culture, and a little history, “American Tall Tales” introduces children to the stories of such folk heroes as Paul Bunyan, John Henry and less known characters like Sally Ann Thunder Ann Whirlwind. A great addition to the family library.
