HAHA TOWN — No matter what you think of the media, we have collective expectations for reporters and anchors to be on the leading edge of any sort of new development, whether it be news, science, technology or a host of other topics.
But expectations, which may or may not be met, do not mean that anyone in media can see into the future. This is more than obvious in BMW’s new flashback commercial starring past "Today Show" fixtures Katie Couric and Bryant Gumbel.
The Super Bowl commercial begins with a 1994 flashback of Couric and Gumbel being entirely confused not only by the at mark used in every email address, but with the whole concept of the Internet.
With where we are with developed technologies today, the whole scene feels farcical, but not many could have predicted then what the Internet would mean to us today.
The video then flash forwards to the duo good-naturedly reenacting their 1994 scene, but instead they’re confused about the BMW i3 electric-drive vehicle the company is advertising.
Ads aside, It’s always a delightful treat for me when celebrities poke fun at themselves.
