BEAR RIVER CITY, Utah (AP) — A 21-year veteran of the Box Elder County Sheriff's Office has been selected as the new sheriff by the local Republican Party.
Saturday's appointment of Kevin Potter will be forwarded to county commissioners, who are expected to ratify it.
Potter will fill the vacancy created by the Jan. 6 death of Sheriff Lynn Yeates. He died of a heart attack after just beginning his third term as sheriff and a nearly 40-year career with the sheriff's office.
Ogden's Standard-Examiner reports Potter received 71 of 93 votes from the county GOP's Central Committee.
He defeated Allan Shinney of the state Tax Commission's motor vehicle enforcement division.
Potter was Yeates' chief deputy for eight years.
The appointment is for two years, with the post up for election in 2016.
