BOUNTIFUL — Voters in Davis and at least eight other counties will be voting by mail in the upcoming midterm election.

Davis County Election Manager Brian McKenzie calls it a hybrid type of voting process. The county will open a limited number of polling locations, but officials are asking residents to vote by mail.

He said the county will analyze this method to see what type of response it generates.

“It is a trial for us. We are testing something out. We do know that our voting machines that we have had for a number of years will need to be replaced,” he said.

McKenzie said the current voter machines were purchased with federal grant money many years ago. That money has run out and the county is responsible to come up with those funds. He said mail-in ballots are more cost effective.

The ballots must be post marked by Nov. 3, the day before Election Day.

Voters can also drop their ballots off at the county office or one of the limited polling locations that will be open on Election Day.

At least nine counties are testing this voting method including Beaver, Cache, Davis, Duchesne, Garfield, Grand, San Juan, Sanpete and Sevier.
