You may not realize it, but your carpet likely takes center stage in your life. After all, it’s likely part of family parties, holiday celebrations, after-school snacks and chats, afternoon play dates and a host of other everyday events.

Despite the traffic it endures, carpet isn’t one of those things you feel like replacing on regular basis. According to U.S. News and World Report, your carpet should last you eight to 10 years. But you can keep your carpet looking newer longer — maybe even beyond that decade mark — by taking some special care.

Vacuum when you don’t think you need it

6 ways to keep your carpet looking new

Sure, you’re going to pull out the vacuum after a popcorn-stringing party with the kids. But just because your carpet looks clean doesn’t mean there aren’t crumbs, dirt and other particles hiding in the plush.

When you let these linger, they can damage fibers and dull the look of your carpet, making it appear older than it is — and who wants that? To keep your carpet looking newer, vacuum all carpet at least once a week — twice a week for high-traffic areas like hallways and family rooms.

Toss the powder (but not on your carpet)

If you’ve been itching to make your carpet smell like a bed of roses, resist the urge. Common odor-eliminating carpet powders, which often include perfumes and chemicals, can leave harmful residues in your carpet. This residue can attract dust and dirt, encouraging a damaging buildup. The best way to eliminate odors in a carpet is to have them cleaned regularly.

Call the pros — regularly

While you may think you’re pretty handy with that shampooer, a professional carpet cleaning is really the best way to keep your carpets soft, beautiful and new-looking.

Don’t wait until your carpet is stained, dirty and unsightly, though. Your carpet should be professionally treated every six to 12 months, according to Angie’s List. This is true even if your carpet doesn’t appear dirty. A professional cleaning can help prevent crushing of the carpet pile, which happens naturally as carpet is used.

Get into runners and rugs

An area rug or runner can help make a room aesthetically “pop.” They can also help you protect your carpet and keep it looking new.

Use rugs in areas of the house that see the most traffic. For example, layer a runner in the hallway on top of your carpet, and use an area rug in living or TV rooms where your family tends to hang out.

A fun, bright-colored rug is perfect in kids’ or play rooms where the little ones like to play on the floor. Welcome mats directly outside and inside main entrances can also help eliminate the amount of dirt and debris tracked into the house (and onto the carpet) from outside.

Spot-check immediately

That spilled bottle of grape juice may seem like a tragedy now, but it’ll be even worse later if you let the stain set in. Treat stains and spots immediately with club soda and a clean, soft cloth. Be sure to blot stains — don’t ever rub them in. For stubborn or large stains, call a professional carpet cleaner as soon as possible.

Go barefoot

It may be a hassle to dump the shoes at the door every time you come inside, but your carpets — and your health — might thank you. Not only will a no-shoes-in-the-house policy help prolong the life of your carpet by reducing the amount of dirt and debris carried inside, but it might also keep your family a little healthier.

According to a University of Arizona study, bacteria on shoes were transferred to flooring about 90 percent of the time. All the more reason to keep the shoes — and the bacteria — at the door.
