SALT LAKE CITY — Bad news for working women in Utah.

The Beehive State was ranked among the 10 states in the country with the largest wage gap between men and women, according to an analysis by the National Women’s Law Center.

On average, a working woman in Utah earns 70 cents for every dollar her male counterpart brings in. That’s compared to the national average of 78 cents per dollar.

Other states where women are paid significantly less than men: Wyoming, West Virginia, North Dakota, Montana, Indiana, Nebraska, Oklahoma and South Dakota. Louisiana was the worst, with a gap of 34 cents in 2013.

The average working woman in Utah makes just 70 cents for every dollar earned by her male counterpart.

The report, compiled using data released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau, revealed that eight states saw wage gaps increase by at least a penny between 2012 and 2013. All eight of those states were included among the ten worst states for equal pay.

Other parts of the country fared much better. In 21 states, the divide in pay narrowed by more than a penny. New York, Maryland, Florida, California, Arizona, Nevada, Hawaii, Vermont and North Carolina claimed the spots for smallest wage gaps, while working women in Washington, D.C., enjoy the narrowest gap in the nation at just 9 cents.

In 22 states, the wage gap remained roughly the same, according to the NWLC analysis. View the full report and a list of rankings here. Jessica Ivins is a content manager for KSL.com and contributor to the Motherhood Matters section.
