PARLEYS CANYON — A man who troopers said led them on a chase through Parleys Canyon and hit a trooper with his car was being treated for a drug overdose before going to jail.
The chase started with a traffic stop on eastbound I-80 near the State Street exit around 2:30 a.m. As a backup K-9 officer began to search the stopped car, the driver drove away. The car clipped a trooper’s leg in the process.
A chase ensued on I-80 up Parleys Canyon at speeds of 70 mph. Eventually troopers spiked all four tires on the fleeing vehicle. The driver finally stopped when troopers performed a pit maneuver near Echo Reservoir in Summit County.
"The suspect had his hands out the window as the pit (maneuver) was ending. He was giving up at that point," said UHP trooper Wyatt Weber.
During the chase, troopers said they saw the driver toss a white substance out the car’s window. They also said the driver swallowed approximately 30 pills in an apparent attempt to hide the drugs.
The man was taken to a hospital to be treated for a drug overdose, Weber said. The man eventually will be taken to the Salt Lake County Jail.
The trooper who was clipped by the car was not seriously injured.
