SALT LAKE CITY — As many busy moms know, getting dressed by noon or going an entire day without having apple juice or spit up spilled on their clothing may be a feat in itself. But many women want more from their wardrobe.

There are moms out there who have found creative ways to dress stylishly, yet comfortably and functionally to fit their busy lifestyles. Here are six fashion tips compiled from their advice:

1. Think about wearing clothes in fabrics that wash well and are convenient to clean.

Cathy Larsen, a mother of five from Sandy, said, “(Clothes) have to be able to go in both the washer and dryer. (There is) no time to hand wash or wait for it to dry.”

2. Dress up an outfit with a cardigan.

Payson mom Darann Smith said wearing a cardigan with another simple item makes an easy, yet stylish, outfit: “I like (pairing) a cute-colored cardigan with an accent tee.” Janae Borrowman Bang, of Ivins, agreed. “I like to have a bunch of different cardigans so I can wear anything and just make it fancy with the cardigan,” she said.

3. Use color as an easy way to make outfits stand out.

“I am all about great colors paired with great textures," said Provo resident Susie Record. "The color has to pop, the fabric has to be soft and comfortable, and the cut has to complement.”

4. Layer clothes to make an outfit interesting.

“ Layer, layer, layer! Crew neck shirts worn under an embellished cardigan, and a simple bracelet, make even the messiest of days look classy,” Ohio mom Morgan Ingram said.

Idaho Falls, Idaho, mom Taunya Ferguson agreed. “Layering is a great way to dress up, or dress down, the fashions of today. Add some cute accessories and you’re set,” she said.

5. Try mixing pants and dresses or skirts.

Some moms recommend combining fashion (dresses and skirts) with comfort (pants). Tennessee mom Elizabeth Behan said, “I always wear pants under dresses and skirts. Layers are always cute.”

“I am a huge fan of my dress pants and skirts," said Logan mom Megan French. "(It) gives a professional look while being very comfortable.”

6. Dress well as an example to your kids.

Although sometimes it may be a hassle to put together a decent outfit, many moms agree that when they take effort to get dressed nicely for the day, it sets a good example for their kids.

“I am a mom of seven kids — three are daughters — so I try and dress comfortable, modern and modest to be a role model for them,” Colorado mom Patti Ricks said.

Judy Kirkham, a Lehi mother and grandmother, said she wants her kids and grandkids to be proud of her. “I have tried to keep up with the fashions so my kids are not embarrassed by how their mom looks, but I want to be comfortable too,” she said.
