TOOELE — A man was arrested Friday after allegedly hitting a pedestrian with his vehicle and fleeing the scene.

Friday, Tooele County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a hit- and-run involving a pedestrian at 600 North and Main Street in Tooele. When deputies arrived, the woman who was struck was responsive and answering questions, a probable cause statement said. She was transported to Mountain West Medical Center with scrapes on her arms and shoulder pain.

Meantime, an officer pulled over a vehicle matching the description of the pickup truck involved in the incident as it was driving southbound away from the scene. The officer could smell alcohol on the breath of the driver, Victor Manuel Molina-Perez, 29, and after determining he could only speak Spanish, called in another officer, the probable cause statement said.

Molina-Perez told deputies he had consumed one beer before driving. He also acknowledged he had noticed hitting something but did not stop because he was scared.

“He said he wasn't sure whether it was a deer or a person,” the probable cause statement said. “Mr. Molina-Perez said he fled the scene because he was scared, but he said he turned around to return to the scene to see what he had hit. Mr. Molina-Perez was ultimately stopped as he was driving southbound again away from the scene.”

Molina-Perez submitted to a field sobriety test and a breath test when we was stopped, both of which he failed, the officer conducting the tests reported. His blood alcohol level was .082, according to the probable cause statement.

He was placed under arrest on suspicion of DUI and fleeing a scene of an accident with personal injury. Molina-Perez was booked into the Tooele County Jail.
