BERLIN (AP) — Germany's foreign minister says his country will seek a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council in 2019 and 2020.
Frank-Walter Steinmeier announced Germany's candidacy in a speech in Hamburg on Monday. He said that the U.N. and the Security Council are needed "more than ever" in efforts to achieve peace.
Germany, which is the European Union's most populous nation and has Europe's biggest economy, last held a seat on the Security Council from 2011-2012.
