MADRID (AP) — Spanish police on Tuesday searched the family house of the Moroccan man arrested for trying to stage an attack on a high-speed train traveling to Paris last month.

A police spokesman said the house of Ayoub El-Khazzani's parents in the southern city of Algeciras was searched following a request from French authorities. He did not elaborate on the operation.

Spanish National Radio and other news outlets, however, said the suspect's parents and a sister were present for the search and later went to a police station to answer questions, but were not detained.

El-Khazzani lived in the house before moving to France in March 2014.

El-Khazzani, who has had ties to radical Islam, was armed with a Kalashnikov rifle and other weapons when he tried to attack the Amsterdam-Paris train on Aug. 20. He shot one man and attacked another but was overcome by passengers.

The officer spoke on condition of anonymity because of police rules preventing him from being identified.

This story has been corrected to show the name of the city is Algeciras, not Aleciras.
