CAIRO (AP) — Egypt's highest appeals court has upheld the sentencing of two police officers to 10 years in prison each for the 2010 killing of a political activist in the port city of Alexandria.
Wednesday's ruling cannot be appealed. The officers were convicted in a retrial last year in a landmark case over the beating death of 28-year-old Khaled Said.
His slaying was one of the sparks that ignited the January 2011 uprising that toppled Egypt's long-time autocratic ruler Hosni Mubarak. Photographs of the Said's severely beaten face were posted on the Internet and became a rallying cry against rampant police brutality.
The police officers — Awad Suliman and Mahmoud Salah — previously had been convicted and sentenced in October 2011 to seven years each but that verdict was later thrown out.
