BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Boise's Municipal Park has a new name after the city dedicated the 28-acre park to three-time Olympic gold medal cyclist Kristin Armstrong.
Boise Mayor Dave Bieter unveiled the park's new signage on Sunday at an event celebrating Armstrong, who just returned from winning her third-consecutive Olympic gold in Rio de Janeiro.
"If it wasn't my favorite park yesterday, it's my favorite park today," Armstrong said at the celebration.
The new Armstrong Park is the most recent addition to Boise's "Ribbon of Jewels," a network of parks running though the city and named after famous women.
Armstrong also holds a Key to the City and has an 8-mile stretch of Bogus Basin Road and a 0.6-mile children's bike trail in Boise Hills Park named for her.
"Here we are. Third time. Fourth Olympic games. And really, I think I figured out why I keep doing it," Armstrong told the crowd of hundreds on Sunday. "It's because of all of you."
Armstrong won the women's time trial cycling race.
Armstrong said she is looking forward to working with youth at the newly renamed park. At the event Sunday she presided over a foot race for kids and presented winners with their own gold medals.
When she's not winning Olympic races, Armstrong works as director of community health at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center. Before the Rio games she declined to compete in some of Europe's toughest races, instead spending time in Boise with her family.
