TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — A suspect in a bank robbery led police on a chase through Tucson, stealing a police car and carjacking a civilian before he was fatally shot near the University of Arizona, authorities said Thursday.
Marana Police Sgt. Chris Warren said officers began looking for the suspect on Wednesday evening.
On Thursday, they tried to stop him before he rammed his vehicle into a patrol car and led officers on the pursuit.
He crashed near Interstate 19, left the car with a firearm and exchanged gunfire with officers, Warren said.
Warren said the man, who has not been identified, then stole a patrol car while the officer was taking cover from gunfire. The suspect drove about 3 miles before he stopped, abandoned the patrol car and carjacked a man, striking him with the car while fleeing, authorities said.
Police were finally able to stop the suspect just south of the university.
Tucson police said the suspect was shot by officers and pronounced dead at a hospital. The man's name wasn't immediately released.
The pursuit resulted in the closing of southbound Interstate 19 and other roads.
