PERRY, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a Rochester man was seriously hurt over the weekend in a skydiving accident in western New York.
The Wyoming County Sheriff's office says the 26-year-old man was injured Sunday in Perry when his chute failed to work properly and he struck the ground "harder than normal."
Officials say the man jumped with an instructor from an airplane at about 10,000 feet. He had problems with his chute, which opened late when the man was close to the ground. Police say the problem was compounded when the skydiver's secondary chute opened at the same time.
The victim was conscious and alert and was flown to Strong Memorial Hospital. Officials say he's hospitalized in guarded condition.
