WASHINGTON (AP) — Officials say the Washington Monument will remain closed at least until the middle of the week while workers make repairs to the elevator.
The National Park Service spokesman Mike Litterst said in an email Monday that the monument will be closed until at least Wednesday. He says the parts for the repair will be delivered and installed on Tuesday.
The monument was closed Saturday after a faulty bearing caused problems with the elevator before the monument opened. The park service says no visitors were in the monument at the time and no staff members were affected. Part of the hoist system must be replaced.
