BARBOURVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky State Police say they're investigating after a deputy fatally shot a kidnapping suspect in southeastern Kentucky.

Police said in a statement that the Knox County deputy shot 30-year-old Jessie J. Mills of Flat Lick during an altercation Wednesday night along a highway.

The statement said the deputy and a constable had responded to a report around 9:50 p.m. that an intoxicated Mills had abducted a child from a home and left. The law enforcement officers located Mills and the child walking along a highway about an hour later. Police say there was an altercation as the officers approached and the deputy fired his weapon.

The deputy and the constable were placed on administrative leave. They were not identified.

No other information was immediately released.
