BISHOPVILLE, S.C. (AP) — Authorities are investigating violence at a maximum-security South Carolina prison that left one inmate dead and another hospitalized.

Local media outlets report Tuesday that the South Carolina Department of Corrections is investigating the death of 35-year-old Ae Kingratsaiphon.

Agency spokeswoman Stephanie Givens says Kingratsaiphon was killed Thursday at Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville. He had been serving a life sentence since 1999 for murder in the killing of the operator of a video gambling parlor in Aiken.

Authorities have not given specifics about the incident or the extent of the second inmate's injuries.

Lee currently houses nearly 1,400 inmates. In recent years, it has experienced riots and other inmate violence.
