RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Democrats in Virginia will appeal a court decision to uphold the state's voter ID law.
The Daily Press (http://bit.ly/1WptNRN) reports that the group filed a notice of appeal Wednesday. Attorney Marc Elias says the group will ask for an expedited review by the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals.
State Democrats had previously filed a lawsuit challenging Virginia's voter ID law, which requires voters to bring a photo ID to the polls. Democrats argue the law targets minority voters who are less likely to have photo IDs.
On May 19, U.S. District Court Judge Henry E. Hudson upheld the law, saying Virginia Democrats failed to show that it targets minority voters. Hudson sided with General Assembly Republicans who have argued that the law protects against voter fraud.
