DETROIT (AP) — Police made a key arrest Thursday in the shooting of a 2-year-old Detroit girl who was in critical condition.
The girl, identified by family members as Makanzee Oldham, was shot in the head while in a car with her father Wednesday night. Police said there was a dispute between her father and neighbors.
A 31-year-old man who may have been the shooter was arrested at a motel. Two other people were also arrested.
Makanzee is the latest child to be the victim of gunfire in Detroit. A young girl was fatally shot on Easter, and charges were filed this week against family members in two shootings — one fatal — involving kids who found unsecured guns.
"When I got the phone call, I kind of got choked up," Assistant Police Chief Steve Dolunt said. "This one hurt, a lot. The young girl wasn't even 3. This one hits hard. When an innocent child gets shot over stupid stuff ... it's just senseless."
St. John Hospital spokesman Brian Taylor said the girl was in critical condition. Police earlier said she had died.
"She's still hanging on, but it's pretty critical," said a relative, Michael Oldham. "The family is trying to hold it together."
