LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — Facing budget problems, the Lafayette Parish school system may have to cut dozens of positions and freeze salaries next school year.
The Advertiser reports (http://bit.ly/21ESd9m ) the district faces a $10.4 million deficit, according to figures presented at a Thursday budget meeting of the Lafayette Parish School Board.
This projected deficit comes despite an expected increase in property tax collections and state funding.
But budget documents show some expenses are increasing and combined sales tax collections dropping by about 7 percent, or more than $5.4 million.
The board is looking at cutting about $5 million from the budget and covering the remaining deficit with money in the general fund. Also, it's looking at eliminating 40 teaching positions and other positions.
Salary freezes are expected to save the district about $2 million.
