CORONA, Calif. (AP) — Police in Southern California evacuated about 1,000 people from homes and an elementary school for much of the day after finding a parked van with a man unconscious inside and a note on the windshield saying the vehicle would explode if it was moved.
Corona police say about eight hours after the van was found, police had determined the man was dead and no explosives were inside. The evacuations were called off. The cause of death has not been determined.
Police say about 2½ gallons of toxic chemicals were found in the van, and they are investigating to learn exactly what they are.
Authorities were called about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday reporting the van, which was parked near Parkridge Elementary.
About 750 children were bused to a nearby high school and reunited with parents.
A robot broke the van's windows and the bomb squad checked for explosives.
