MOORHEAD, Minn. (AP) — A small college in Moorhead is facing criticism from some students and alumni after announcing plans to make cuts in foreign languages.
The Star Tribune (http://strib.mn/1SYWYru ) reports Concordia College recently said it would stop offering certain majors, including French, German and Latin, to help balance its budget.
Some students and alumni accused the school of turning against one of the core parts of a liberal arts education, and posters mocking the decision were soon found on campus.
Concordia President William Craft says the cutbacks are needed after years of falling enrollment and a $2.7 million budget gap. He says the college has seen a "marked drop" in student interest in the majors.
Craft says classes in most of the languages will still be offered, but not enough to qualify for majors.
