ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York health officials say nine research teams at institutions across the state have been awarded $5.7 million toward developing treatments for spinal cord injuries.
According to the Health Department, about 1,000 New Yorkers suffer traumatic spinal injuries annually, joining nearly 276,000 people living in the U.S. with paralysis.
Awards include $1.2 million to Albert Einstein College of Medicine researching enhanced urological function and $1.1 million to the Regenerative Research Foundation in Rensselaer into the sustained delivery of certain drugs to promote regeneration.
This is the first round of competitive awards administered by New York State Spinal Cord Injury Research Board since they were reinstated in 2013.
It follows $71 million recommended previously.
New York researchers have filed at least 22 related patent applications since 2001.
