AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — A nonprofit working with struggling students in Augusta has won national accreditation.

The Augusta Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/1LKYzxR) Communities In Schools of Augusta-Richmond County has received the recognition from its national parent organization after a five-year effort.

The group brings supplies to needy students and provides graduation coaches for local schools.

The local group's executive director, Laurie Cook, said that the recognition means the effort is moving in the right direction.

The nonprofit operates a program meant to help high school dropouts get diplomas or their equivalent. During the last school year, more than 60 people in the program received a diploma, seven were awarded GED and 55 students earned enough credits to return to their home schools at the right grade level.
