BOSTON (AP) — The president of the Boston Public Library says the potential theft of valuable art is a crime against Boston and has promised to strengthen security.
Amy Ryan told the Boston Globe (http://bit.ly/1Av7Qr4) Wednesday she recognized there were security lapses in the library's special collections department and vowed to "get to the bottom of it."
The Boston police, FBI and U.S. attorney's office are investigating the whereabouts of more than $600,000 in art.
An audit of the library released Wednesday says it was ineffectively protecting special collections, haphazardly storing valuables and not maintaining a complete inventory of prized possessions.
Ryan declined to discuss the audit.
Boston Mayor Martin Walsh says it's too soon to fully support Ryan and did not say whether she should resign.
