JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Members of the Jackson Public School District school board have authorized the board attorney to set up a meeting with the Ethics Commission to find out whether it violated state law by not requiring certain meetings be open to the public.
Board President Dr. Otha Burton said Tuesday the policy the board adopted in January stating the board's committee meetings are "not required to be open to the public" and that the minutes from such meetings must be transcribed were actually an attempt to ensure more transparency.
The Clarion-Ledger reports (http://on.thec-l.com/1Cw2JXv ) Burton also said going forward, "all meetings will be open to the public."
Mississippi law requires all public body, including a committee of a body, should be open to the public unless an executive session is declared.
