BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Residents of a Birmingham apartment complex are recovering after a fire on Christmas Day destroyed four units and injured six people.

Al.com reports (http://bit.ly/1AVAiQ7 ) some families lost everything but the clothes on their backs in the fire that broke out at the Valley Brook Apartments at about 2 a.m. Christmas morning. Authorities say the injured included four children. Firefighters say the blaze was started by food left unattended on a hot stovetop.

The Red Cross has organized temporary housing for families needing a place to stay. The apartment complex's leasing office is accepting donations of food, clothing and toys for the victims.

Marquita McCloud says her apartment was destroyed shortly after he children opened Christmas gifts at midnight. She says, "We're just going to have to start over with everything."
