LAS VEGAS (AP) — Authorities say 175 tickets were issued in just five hours during a recent effort to curb trespassing by motorists and pedestrians on railroad track rights-of-way in the Las Vegas area.
Union Pacific police joined Nevada Highway Patrol troopers and Las Vegas police for the Dec. 3 crackdown at a railroad crossing at Wyoming Avenue and Desert Inn Road, and Dec. 4 at a crossing on Las Vegas Boulevard near Sunset Road.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1xljFL1 ) one driver stopped completely on the tracks and crossing arms came down on his vehicle.
The railroad's Crossing Accident Reduction Education and Safety program aims to promote safety on Union Pacific property.
Officials say that in 2012, 433 people died and 411 were injured trespassing on railroad property in the U.S.
