SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Two Utah girls are facing charges after police say they concocted an elaborate fake kidnapping story.
Bountiful police said Wednesday the 16- and 17-year-old girls were charged in juvenile court with 911 abuse and making a false police report, both misdemeanors.
Authorities say they claimed they were taken at knifepoint by a couple in an SUV in September, bound and held hostage before they escaped 75 miles away from home.
Police say the girls actually walked away from home in Bountiful, took public transportation to Santaquin and put duct tape on themselves before placing a frantic 911 call.
The Deseret News reports (http://bit.ly/1tkmAzE ) investigators don't know why the teenagers made up the story.
The Associated Press is not naming the girls because they are juveniles.
