A fire during Superstorm Sandy leveled 130 houses in Breezy Point, Queens, and the beachfront community — one of the hardest hit areas by the megastorm — continues to recover two years later.
While some residents were able to repair their homes, others were forced to replace theirs. New houses in the community are being built on elevated concrete foundations to protect them from future storms.
New York is financing at least 2,300 home elevations statewide so far, with nearly 10,000 more houses eligible.
Recovery around the entire New York metropolitan area affected by Sandy continues as homes continue to be rebuilt and government agencies continue working on projects to prepare the area for the next big storm.
